Undercurrents exhibition

Poster for Undercurrents exhibition, featuring a painting by Natasha Zraikat of a half human half sea creature with a serpent tail rising to the surface of the water to take a breath, cool colours below and warm colour above.

I am so excited to announce that I will be a part of the Undercurrents group exhibition with WOW x WOW Gallery this month! I am just thrilled to be showing my work in this absolute melting pot of incredible talent.

Some of my all-time favourite imaginative artists have shown with this gallery (some of them are in this very exhibition!) so having my work in such great company has got me fan-girling just a little bit. And the fact that my artwork was selected as the cover art for the exhibition was just the cherry on top!

About the gallery

About the works

I created two brand new works especially for the Undercurrents exhibition, both of which are deeply personal to me.

Painting myself as a sea creature is a return to my younger self – a girl who would channel her inner anguish into darkly beautiful scenes of strange hybrid-like creatures. These works were created after the most recent of a series of life-changing events, including the passing of my father late last year.

They, like the other works in my current series, explore both my inner and outer worlds – my concern for the greater human collective through emotions and symbols rooted in my own childhood.

Water is symbolic of deep emotion, and even according to my astrological sign of Pisces, I can have a tendency to feel as though I am thriving and drowning in it all at once.

Beneath (pictured above): In this piece we see a part-human creature of the sea rising up from the dark depths of the water, gasping at the surface for a breath of air. The cool blue tones beneath the surface shimmer in stark contrast to the bright, warm light of the world above. Unsure of where she belongs, she resides somewhere between the two worlds. A living contradiction – the creature exists in a place in which she cannot fully survive.

A painting of a part human part sea creature rising up from the dark depths of the water, gasping at the surface for a breath of air. There is a full moon above the water.

Breach (pictured above): In this piece we see a part-human creature of the sea breaching the surface of the water, taking in a full breath of cool night air. The warm glow of the full moon above reaches down to greet her at the surface where the two worlds meet.

How to see the show

You can check out the exhibition from the 2nd to the 23rd of February over at the WOW x WOW gallery website. For any sales enquiries regarding these works, please email the gallery at info@wowxwow.com.
