This painting is one of a series of painted studies that I have done looking out to sea from my home as the sun sets. It is wonderful to see how each day brings a completely different range of colours and shapes. These paintings are a real challenge to paint due to the speed required to complete one as I race to finish before running out of light.

In order to catch the most brilliant point of the sunset, I must wait until the sun is very low in the sky, nearly out of sight. The colours and light change extremely fast at this point - far too fast to capture - so these paintings allow me to focus on capturing the overall emotion, the feel and mood of the scene, rather than every last detail.
