Nearly 3 months ago, on the 5th of May 2023 there was a full lunar eclipse. The next morning, after returning from walking my dog on the beach on the way back into my building, a barn owl suddenly fell from the sky into the garden directly at my feet.

I live on the Gold Coast, so not only had I never seen an owl in my life (we have Tawny Frogmouths here in Australia) but I didn’t even know they existed in this country, much less near the ocean where I live.

I was completely blown away.

This owl spent a solid few minutes breathing heavily in the garden at my feet. Face down, wings wide, occasionally craning its head all the way around to look into my eyes. Its eyes were surreal, so profound, like nothing I’d ever seen.

I finally decided to try throwing a towel over the owl - either to scoop it up and care for it or otherwise to send it on its way. I flung my beach towel over it and it swooped up and flew off suddenly, beating its wings low and strong. I remember being impressed my the sound of those wings beating the air as she left.

This moment absolutely blew me away. I knew that it was something meaningful, that this owl and I had been brought together for those few minutes for a reason. So I journaled to see what came up.

What emerged was that I needed to paint her.I needed to paint the owl. That would help me to understand fully the meaning of this meeting. So I did. And this painting is the result.
